The demulcent herbs in this tea will soothe dry and irritated mucous membranes, relieving minor pain and inflammation. This is greatly beneficial for the dry coughs and sore throats associated with influenza and other viral infections. Demulcent herbs are also referred to as mucoprotective agents because they are so crucial in protecting the health of the mucous membranes. Why is this important? Well, these membranes contain loads of antibodies and immune cells that act as our first line of defense. When they are moist and healthy they trap bacteria, viruses and dust. Conversely, when these membranes of our throat and lungs are dry the immune cells have no medium in which to travel about and our immune response is compromised. One of the main reasons people get sick more frequently in the winter months is due to spending more time inside with heaters going constantly. This dry heat causes our mucus membranes to get very dry and this makes us more susceptible. In addition to helping the respiratory tract, this demulcent tea will also soothe and protect the lining of the gut, helping relieve the pain of ulcers and speeding their healing time. It is also useful as an adjunct therapy for soothing bladder infections. The take away is …demulcents protect, heal and balance your mucous membranes and are therefore key allies for health and immunity.*
This herbal mix is highly concentrated and only one level Tablespoon is needed to make an entire quart of tea. This 4 oz. bag contains 20 level Tablespoons of herb mix and therefore makes 20 quarts (80 cups) of infusion. If you put more than one Tbsp per quart it will be a little too thick. If too thick for your taste simply dilute with warm water. It is most helpful to sip the demulcent tea throughout the day to regulate and moisten your mucous membranes. Alternately, one can drink 1 cup two times per day.
